I want an inspiration feature "beer for your buck" where you can sort not just by price of flight but price of average beer at destination. This can obviously be combined into a cost of living + avg flight price + hotel price metric.
The reason I want this is because some flights are cheap but they take you to destinations that are expensive or have poor exchange rates for your local currency. I want to know what destinations are gonna net me the actual cheapest holiday.
Given the following theoretical browse query searching from Edinburgh to anywhere.
If we use the travel cost index located here http://www.numbeo.com/hotel-prices/rankings.jsp and normalised so the most expensive place has an index of 1 then we can cross apply it to the prices above by multiplying the travel cost index and the flight price you get the following table ordered by adjusted flight price (a) including Bang For Your Buck Index (i) with the corresponding total trip price percentile (p) to show you just how much more expensive a trip to a place is compared to another:
As you can see:
- A trip to Sydney from Edinburgh is going to cost you on average 10 times more than a trip to Prague despite the ticket price of the flight to Sydney being only 5 times more expensive. A
- A trip to Bucharest is going to be half as expensive as a trip to Rome despite the flight price being fairly similar.¬
- A trip to Cape Town is half as expensive as a trip to Sydney despite the flight prices being fairly similar.
